Whether you’ve actually tried it yourself or not, the chances are pretty good that you’re at least familiar with the concept of virtual reality. It’s changing the way people game and it’s helping armchair travelers take their experiences to the next level. It’s even helping therapists assist patients as they heal from psychological or emotional trauma. Pretty soon, virtual reality enhanced sex could be part of your intimate routine with your partner, or maybe just yourself to start with. ;)

If you like the sounds of that, you’re definitely not alone. According to a recent study conducted by a Swedish company called Natural Cycles, about 40 percent of those polled said they thought VR tech could definitely add positively to the sexual experience. About 16 percent expressed active interest in taking such technology for a spin. About 63 percent of participants said that they either already regularly use sex toys or would like to as well, so there’s definitely a potential market out there. It’s likely only a matter of time before virtual sex technology is seen as part of a healthy, active sex life and that future could be closer than we think.

What would virtual reality sex be like?

In case you haven’t heard, virtual reality sex is already out there and it’s swiftly gaining in popularity. For instance, VR.SEX already hosts an entire library of POV and virtual reality videos and it’s catching on like gangbusters. Many sex toy websites offer VR-enhanced options for sale as well. However, we can definitely expect the future of VR sex to take things even further than that.

Wearable tech will likely become significantly more advanced, as well as more affordable and more widely available. Sex toy lovers also have plenty to get excited about, as increasingly more intelligent “teldildonics” options explode onto the market and make their way into nightstands everywhere. Think strokers, dildos, dongs, and vibrators that have the very real ability to mimic the feel and behavior of real penises and vaginas by sending and receiving touch sensations over a network.

Those who’ve had a chance to experience what’s already out there definitely love it, so this isn’t just a flash in the pan. It’s a trend that’s likely to continue and possibly dominate the entire industry one day.

What are some of the benefits of VR sex?

Today, the idea of keeping a rabbit vibe or a Fleshlight in your night stand to elevate your solo sessions or spice up your sex life with your partner is pretty commonplace. It’s also widely accepted that they bring many benefits to the table. Sex toys have helped millions of people over the years truly get to know their own bodies, not to mention their partners’. They’ve started an open dialogue about sex as well leading to healthier, more open sexual expression in general.

It only stands to reason that as virtual reality sex gains in popularity and becomes continually more widespread, that it will change the way we have sex for the better as well. Some of the potential benefits include:

  • Long-Distance Relationships: With social media and the internet connecting people across great distances to a higher degree than ever, long-distance relationships are both more common and easier to maintain. Teldildonics means more toys on the market that not only accurately mimic the sensations of real sex, but give long-distance couples additional creative ways to interact on an intimate level.
  • Experimentation: Millions of people have sexually adventurous spirits that they aren’t entirely sure what to do with. There are definitely things they’d like to try, but they aren’t sure how to go about it or bring up the topic with a partner. Virtual reality could potentially give all people the chance to explore fetishes, feel out fantasies, or experiment with new activity in a safe space that’s free of pressure or judgment.
  • Practice: Both men and women already use sex toys like vibrators and strokers to become better lovers. They’re wonderful for practicing control, building staying power, or learning the fine art of what makes your body tick between the sheets. Virtual reality could take this process to the next level by heightening the experience and making it even more like the real thing.

As touched on above, these technologies and concepts are already part of how many people out there are having sex, both with themselves and with partners. Virtual reality sex apps and games already exist, as do growing social demographics that swear by them. There are even virtual escort services out there, not to mention many cam services that already use the tech to enhance the potential experience for the viewer.

The possibility of a virtual reality headset in every pair of hands and a teldildonics-equipped toy in every private nightstand drawer seems likely. How does that make you feel? How would you use VR tech to take your sex life to the next level?
