The Romanian Boy is a story that began life as a fantasy that my boyfriend was telling me about. He had been dreaming about the castles of Romania (where he's from) and fantasising about where some of the dark, sexual forces that lurk within us all could potentially take you.

Given that these castles are in the general vicinity of Transylvania, it would have been fairly obvious to focus on vampires, but instead his stories led me to werewolves.

I've written a fair bit of erotic gay fiction about werewolves. Not the m/m romances that seem to appeal to female readers, but actual intense and authentic encounters between men who connect sexually with other men.

The Pack

My favourite werewolf series is called The Pack – a loose collection of werewolf stories that focus most of the action in old Europe, during the time of the 100 Years' War.

Tomas had heard stories of wolf attacks and giant wolf men, but they always seemed to be the stuff of fairytales – stories to scare children and warn them to stay out of the forest. But one day, as the snow fell, the wolves entered the city.Tomas had been out in the streets, scavenging for firewood when the wolves arrived. They rode into the city in the form of men. A pack of fifty. The walls of the city had fallen into disrepair – there was nothing to stop them. They were quite a sight – a pack of fifty strong, muscular men riding in on horses, into a city that was full of desperate scared people, struggling to survive. With no army to resist them the wolves quickly took control of the city. Their leader was a wolf called Courtaud. The peasants were terrified by the wolves and lived in fear, but there was nowhere to go. Anyone who tried to leave the city was killed. The peasants became the slaves of the wolves. Courtaud was ruthless and brutal but he brought order to the lives of the peasants. Putting them to work in exchange for food and safety. The city walls were repaired. Food supplies became more reliable. The wolves grew in number. Courtaud commandeered the Notre Dame Cathedral in the centre of the city, setting up his court and in his inner circle in the massive stone temple.

As the story of The Romanian Boy evolved, it became part of the loose narrative of The Pack – a stand-alone story, but referencing some of the characters and context that had been established in The Pack.

Callum Laird

In The Romanian Boy we meet Callum Laird — a powerful businessman from Edinburgh.

Callum finished his drink and headed back to the dance floor to immerse himself in the music once more. He could feel the rhythm, he closed his eyes, feeling connected to the men that for whatever reason had been drawn to that dance-floor on a Saturday night. When he opened his eyes, Callum saw a young guy looking intently at him. The kid had dark hair, dark eyes, a face that somehow wasn’t innocent but was perhaps inquisitive. He looked about eighteen, but was probably older. Callum held his gaze. They danced, not together but aware of each other.“Drink?” Callum mimed to the kid, but the kid smiled and shook his head. They continued to dance. They were surrounded by men, the crowd pulsating around them, but Callum’s attention was focused on this young kid. Callum didn’t really have a specific type of guy that he went for, but he generally liked them to be a bit younger, he liked to feel in control, that he was in charge.

Alex Lupescu

Alex Lupescu is the young guy that Callum Laird met in London. Callum soon finds himself in Romania searching for Alex.

Located in the Transylvanian mountains, Brasov is an ancient city – with archaeological ruins dating back to the time when the Roman Empire controlled this part of the world. In the twelfth century, the ruling Hungarian kings encouraged the migration of settlers from Germany, and in 1211 King Andrew II of Hungary ordered the Teutonic Knights to fortify the region as part of the defences of the border of the Kingdom of Hungary. Located at the intersection of the trade routes that linked the Ottoman Empire with Western Europe, the city that is now known as Brasov became rich and powerful. Transylvania became part of Romania in 1918.

Rasnov Fortress

After meeting up with Alex, Callum is happy for Alex to take him on a guided tour of the region. The last stop on their tour is Rasnov Fortress.

“This is Rasnov Fortress…” explained Alex. “It was built by the Teutonic Knights in the thirteenth century as part the defences that they built for the Hungarian kings. It eventually came under the control of Prince Bathory of Transylvania and it’s been in that family ever since. It’s still a private residence today…”“You really are a good tour guide!” admitted Callum, impressed by Alex’s knowledge. “But if it’s a private residence, I’m guessing that we can’t go inside… but still, it will be cool to have a wander around the gardens – those battlements look awesome!”As their car approached the gateway, Callum could see that it was closed and guarded.“Maybe we won’t be able to go in…” observed Callum, “…it doesn’t look particularly welcoming…” One of the guards approached the car and Alex rolled down his window and nodded. The guard immediately saluted and ordered that the gate be opened so that the car could drive through. “He saluted you?” asked Callum in surprise.“I know the people here…” shrugged Alex, “…they like things to be quite formal.”

If you're into gay werewolves...

The Romanian Boy is a story that is still a bit of a work in progress – I'd like to extend the narrative a bit further and add some more detail and depth to the characters. But, if you’re into gay werewolves, then you might find The Romanian Boy a good way to pass the time…
