How a Sensual Hair Fetish Begins

It begins with tingles. That sensation you experience when someone brushes or caresses your hair. It may only last a moment and nothing more. For some of us, the sensation lingers and evolves into a more lasting impression. A shiver down the spine or butterflies. The more vigorous the touch, brushing, or combing, the stronger the experience until arousal occurs. This is where the fetish begins.

I have a hair fetish. It developed over several decades from an innocent fling with the tingles to a full-blown incorporation of this fetish into my sex life. In conversations with other fetishists and people interested in exploring this kink, I am often asked questions about my personal life. One in particular, "How did you realize you had a hair fetish?" It's the question I'm asked most often. How does a hair fetish manifest itself into a part of one's sex life? It happens subtly and over a long period of time, at least it did for me.

I grew up with long hair for most, if not all, of my childhood. If my tresses didn't travel halfway down my back, they were at least past my shoulders. I often wore a fringe, which I later grew out along with the rest of my hair, in my teens. As a preteen in the 1980s, crimped and teased hair was in fashion, and I was not afraid to experiment. It was even more fun to have friends over and style each other's hair.

There were times when my hairstyle was a mess, due to a failed styling technique or lack of brushing. A quick "Brush it or I'll cut it" threat from my parents was enough to shock me into compliance, fearing the loss of my hair. I took great pride in its length and horrified at the thought of short hair. During this time I noticed new styles too: short bobs, pixies, shaved hair, and asymmetrical cuts. The 80s and 90s brought a lot of new ideas that intrigued me, and yet the idea of cutting my hair was frightening. That didn't stop me from thinking about it.

At the age of 17, my hair was at its longest: two thirds down my back. My natural colour is dark blond and I had tried a few different colours by then, from red to mahogany then black and back to lighter blond. I had a boyfriend at the time who took great pleasure in brushing and playing with my hair, which I found enjoyable. One evening we were watching a fashion show with runway models. Many of them had short bob styles. Casually, he mentioned their hairstyle and how cool it looked. This immediately planted a thought in my head. What if I tried going short? What would it feel like?

The next day I stood before the mirror, examining the length of my hair. It was long and thick, also wavy and dark blond. I was in my last year of high school, with a part-time job and a boyfriend. A boyfriend who woke me up to this curiosity. I grabbed the scissors and a box of hair lightener. I took a deep breath before opening the shears and cut off around 10 inches of hair all around my head, as evenly as I could, until my locks bounced off of my shoulders. The rush was incredible. I felt not only lighter, but high from the actual sensation of cutting off my hair. The feeling only grew more intense as I ran my fingers through it. Slowly, deliberately. A fetish was born.

I didn't think of it as a fetish then. It was more of a rush or feeling of renewal. It was 1993 and I was ready to try more haircuts, going progressively shorter which each one. The grunge look with short fringe and the goth style with blue-black hair and a hairdrobe to match. I enjoyed the different reactions from people, from friends, family, and coworkers to complete strangers. The idea of transforming my look, especially my hair, was very enjoyable. As I moved into my 20s and 30s, I mellowed a bit to concentrate on my career and starting a family. It didn't resurface again until my mid-30s.

Forums, websites, and blogs. Haircutting videos and chat rooms. The internet opened a whole new world of fetishes for many of us, including hair. Haircutting, shaving, clippers, capes, extreme styles, role-play scenarios and so much more. It was overwhelming at first and addictive over time. One online article about celebrity hairstyles unexpectedly led to one site, then more. I wrote stories and met people online and in real life. What I considered a bizarre and unusual fetish seemed increasingly more common and even more interesting than I could have imagined.

Over time and through experience, hair play flourished as part of my sex life. If you find someone genuinely interested in your fetish, assuming everything else is good, don't let them go! Have fun and try as many variations of your interests as you please. From trims, to buzz cuts, and full heads shaved. Like anything else, safety and consent are paramount. Having a great time with your partner, lover, or hair play partner is also key. Combining hair fun with other kinks and BDSM is a wonderful journey too. Whether you are vanilla or turned on by kinkiness, hair play can still be fun. Sensual, tactile, from tingles and butterflies to orgasmic fun.
