Erotic artists did not start off as shock artists. The public’s reception to this kind of art has changed dramatically from the later part of the 20th century when experimental art, a euphemism for eroticism, was intended to explore sexuality and the artist's perception of its place in society. Alberto Mielgo is often referred to as a shock artist. Shock art was born out of necessity. As the digital space exploded in the 21st century, the lines of erotic art and pornography began to blur. A new generation lost sight of the beauty inherent in sexuality. Artists and creatives pivoted in their messages as it became important to make a statement. Statements by artists, like Alberto Mielgo, became a signature art form that were intended to challenge the status quo, the puritanical, and the hypocrisy of a society that bends to the will of the media. In his own words, Alberto Mielgo explains his view of the world around him, that seems to close one eye with disdain and open the other eye wide with desire.

Shock Art

Alberto Mielgo: People think that I am trying to shock. Why is this shocking? Why my paintings are so good? Why Jesus Christ painting in the cross are not more shocking than my things? Because religious paintings can be really disturbing you know, like they are almost naked too, they are suffering as hell, they are bleeding, and they are in a cross. Or maybe they are like decapitated, and nobody…nobody is worried about that. They look in religious images. Having raised myself look in religious images, and they are fucking shocking, and they are fucking disturbing.

Why?...Why my paintings are disturbing? They are relaxed people, they are naked people, they are showing their vaginas yes, but what is a vagina man? The most important tool in life.

Obsessing…What that means? What means obsessing, that you are thinking about naked girls all the time? No I am thinking about many other things all the time. Naked girls is my very personal thing. I am not only painting naked girls. But I think that I find it’s a very nice subject. My house is all full of these paintings, because naked girls is a very pleasant thing too look you know, they never fail to delight me. It’s something that I really find amazing and inspiring.

Michelle Anne Sinclair: I am not really different, but what I realized over the years is, when I am on camera and I am going to have sex, that all these like judgements or these ideas of what’s right and wrong in society or during sex, they go away. For that moment it’s like, I don’t think about being…that I am doing something wrong. But sometimes when I am not doing those things, and I am thinking, I am thinking, am I…is it okay to do this? You know, like I actually think when I became a mother, I became even more of that, like I have to remind myself all the time that it is okay you know, I am not doing anything wrong; I am really expressing myself in a sexual way. I just happen to be something that a lot of people aren’t okay with.

Alberto Mielgo: Michelle is such a cute and sweet lady, and it’s something that I was not expecting to be honest. Like of course, unfortunately we have preconceived ideas, and first time when I met her I was expecting that she would be like a playmate; coming like chewing gum, “So how you doing man, you want me to…” you know. So suddenly I found this girl that is very innocent, in a way.

I was doing this painting, where she appears and then I was planning to go to LA for a living, and my friends they were saying, “Can you imagine that suddenly you met the owner. What will you say? Will you show her the paintings?” I just met her, in this party…I mean this exhibition, and then I saw her and then we were talking, and I say, “Hey Michelle, I did a painting of you,” and then she says, “You want to sell me what?” And the I say, “No, no, no, I don’t want to sell anything. I am not selling it… no fucking way!” That painting is not for sale. That’s for me forever.

And I was having a very good feeling, and then I went home, and I was thinking, “Wow I would love to do a paint you know, on her…or about her."

Michelle Anne Sinclair: I like that it’s different because, people see me naked all the time, they see me with my legs spread open in really intense positions and so, this is also another side of me, and I think you know, people don’t always get to see that…that shy or like sensual kind of tasteful…

You know I am not saying that porn isn’t tasteful, but it definitely can be intense for some people, so this is like another part of me.

Alberto Mielgo: I think that Michelle is coming from a world that is quite extreme which is porn, and porn is hard thing to do. So I was thinking like, “Why we are not making the mural? Why we don’t do some kind of just erotic thing, some…” She is partially naked, which…I find that kind of very…very appealing; when someone is partially naked. And like…I just wanted to bring her in my world of paintings, where nudity is more like erotic thing.

Michelle Anne Sinclair: You know what is attractive about this painting to me? Is that it isn’t exactly like you would see me; it’s the way that he sees me.
