Whether we like it or hate it, period sex is a thing. It's not like women can help having their periods, and it's also not like guys can help being horny. Once in a while, period sex will happen—even among vanilla couples.

Plenty of pros and cons exist when it comes to getting it on during "that time of the month." Not sure whether you want to give it a shot? Here's the truth about the biggest pros and cons of period sex, and why you should give it a shot.

Pro: Period blood makes for good lube.

If you're typically dry down there, or if you need a ton of lube, then one of the best perks of period sex is the fact that period blood naturally lubricates you down there. This means less Astroglide, and a faster time to just "get to it."

That being said, this is one of the pros periods bring that also has a negative side for many...

Con: It can get messy.

When weighing the pros and cons of period sex, we can't avoid the obvious issue. Almost every girl out there has had at least one set of sheets ruined because of periods that bled more than they expected. Period sex is messy.

Most of the time, you can just put down a towel and have fun. However, it's not always that easy. If you have a very heavy flow, then it can soak through the towel. If you're not a laundry whiz, then you also may end up having to struggle with the aggravating chore of removing period blood from sheets.

The issue of messiness also leads to another minor issue. Period sex positions can be very limited for certain couples, primarily because no one wants to deal with the "splatter" issue or cope with cramping up during sex.

Pro: Some guys have a fetish for it—and most are totally okay with it.

You would be shocked at how many guys are actually completely fine with period sex. These boys have looked at the pros and cons of period sex, and also realized that you really can't help bleeding. Upon realizing that it's totally natural and normal, most men are okay with it.

Additionally, there's a small percentage of men who really get into the idea of period sex. In fact, for them, one of the biggest pros periods can bring is that it turns them on. They may actually go so far as to earn their "Red Wings" and give oral sex while a girl's bleeding.

Con: The guys who aren't into period sex are usually REALLY not into period sex.

In many cases, girls will end up going on a date with at least one guy who simply abhors the idea of having sex during a period. I knew one who said, "I say no to period sex, period!"

Guys like this might even go so far as to shame women for having a period—and make them feel unattractive. However, if you think about it, this is more of a pro than a con. Guys who react this way to period sex or blood probably aren't worth dating, anyway.

Pro: Some women experience stronger orgasms during their periods, and period sex can help alleviate cramping.

Don't ask why, but a lot of women find that they get stronger orgasms when they are getting it on during that time of the month. Additionally, one of the better pros sex can offer is that it can help alleviate cramping and relieve pain.

So, yes, sex during your period can make you feel better. We're not sure whether or not having sex multiple times makes it even better, but it seems like a good idea to give it a try.

Con: Period sex smells.

Period blood smells. There, I said it. It's not a sexy smell. Unfortunately, short of burning incense and hosing yourself down in perfume, there's not much that you can do to prevent that smell.

Of all the pros and cons of period sex we've covered, this happens to be one of the grossest pitfalls we've covered so far. We'd be lying if we didn't talk about it though.

Pro: It can make your period shorter.

Apparently, all that jostling around makes the blood leave faster than you'd expect it to. This is purely anecdotal, but the fact is that period sex does have that perk for some women.

I don't know many people who actually enjoy Aunt Flo's visit—at all. If you're thinking about the pros and cons of period sex, this one might be the encouragement you need to give it a shot.

Con: You can still get knocked up on your period.

You may have heard that women can't get pregnant on their periods. This is not true. Though it is rare to actually get pregnant during your period, it is possible. So, if you were hoping that the myth was true, sorry to break it to you. It's not, and you still need to use protection.

Pro: It's way more intimate—but it's a messy sort of intimate.

Period sex tends to push boundaries and force you to be vulnerable with your lover. It's intimate in a way that normal sex isn't. After all, you're having sex with blood coming out of you, and your lover is still embracing that side of you.

All the different pros and cons of period sex really just boil down to this single point. It's intimacy, but messy intimacy. Are you into it? If so, then do it. If not, then don't.
