Is Monogamy Natural?

The 411 on monogamy.

I just want to start off by saying that I think if one finds the right person and falls in love then why not settle for monogamy. However, that has not happened in my life so, in my opinion, I prefer to play the field. Personally, I feel that love is just your body producing dopamine when you meet someone that you are attracted to. Therefore, you have this euphoric feeling of love. Once again it is just my opinion and I’ll let you form your own once you read my article.

It has been said by scientists that we as humans carry the biological imprint of polygamy, which is the opposite of lifelong fidelity to one particular mate. Which can explain why so many people cheat instead of just leaving the person that they are with at the time. To complicate matters further, polygamy is separated into two categories which are polygyny and polyandry. The difference is that one allows a woman more than one husband and the other allows a man more than one wife. Thus stating that both man and women are equal.

The question is, if we carry the evolutionary imprint of polygamy…basically if we are supposed to have a lot of sex with multiple partners, why does society in this day and age advocate monogamy. Because that goes against our animalistic predilection for multiple sexual partners. By the way, there are a few species that do mate for life and even if their mate dies they refuse to mate with another animal.

Given the fact that 80 percent of early human societies were polygamous, you have to wonder why did later populations decide to become monogamous after so many years. Unfortunately, science has no answer for that. One theory suggests that it was just easier having “two parents” around to raise their young. Certain animal young can survive on their own without parental supervision, but human children cannot and that is just something that has always been a scientific fact.

On the other side of the argument, both traditional theorists and modern scientists point to four facts of human nature that commend monogamy. First, unlike most other animals, humans crave sex all the time, especially when they are young and most fertile. Theorists also believe that monogamy is not "natural" because there are bible verses that indicate the polygamist lifestyle. While I don't condone being a sister wife, they believe that it is okay to have more than one partner if you're women because men are equal to women. Which I do believe is how it should be.

Needless to say, sex is an irresistible urge…a deep seeded need that we as people have to fulfill and the people that are in a monogamous relationship are no different. To put it simply if your boyfriend/girlfriend are not getting any then they will probably go out to search elsewhere to satisfy their need. Because we all have wants, we all have needs! A healthy sex life leads to a happy life.

But I will leave it you as the reader to decide whether monogamy is natural or not…

(I just want to say that I only endorse safe sex! Sex is fun as well as enjoyable but only when it is with someone you're comfortable with and if it is indeed safe).
