Hi there, let's have a chat about some sexy stuff.

Now, it may seem weird, but looking after your sexual health should be just as important as looking after anything else. Unfortunately, not everyone treats it as such. One reason why is because it can be a bit embarrassing, but it’s just the same as any other physical problem. If something gets left untreated, or questions get left unasked, then things can get a lot worse. When things get worse, they can affect our mental health, too. If you have pain, that can make you stressed and upset. If you are worrying about a relationship, that can make you feel depressed or anxious. The first step to looking after your sexual health is to be honest with yourself.

Being honest with yourself means facing up to reality. Sex is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, so if you are feeling uncomfortable physically or mentally, you shouldn’t try to hide from it. Like I said before, the longer you let a problem go on, the worse it may get. The second step to looking after your sexual health is to be honest with your partner. Now, I’m not saying you need to tell them literally everything about yourself, but communication is key in any type of relationship. Let them know what feels good and what doesn’t and encourage them to be honest with you, too. Trust me, miscommunication can lead to disastrous situations. Whenever my friends confess their struggles to me, I can usually always give them two pieces of advice: communicate more and have more balance! (Not literal balance, well.. maybe in some cases?) Anyway, back to the point... If your sexy-time-person is ignoring or rejecting what you are saying, this is unhealthy. You absolutely must respect each other’s bodies, because, again, it can lead to poor mental health otherwise. Lots of anxiety around this kind of thing can sometimes end up making things more difficult, not very fun at all.

Now that you’re great at being honest with yourself and your partner, you’ll be amazing at being honest with your doctor. Don’t worry, they have to keep everything confidential, unless they believe you or someone else is at risk of harm. You may not even need to make a doctor’s appointment; many towns have sexual health clinics and walk-in services.

So, what sort of things can you go in for? The answer is, pretty much anything. Some people might think if their question is short and sounds silly, there’s no point. Wrong, my friend. We don’t want that worry building up and spiralling into a bigger problem, so my advice is that it’s always worth it. Some of us put up with a hell of a lot, because we think we have to. For example, we might stay on a contraceptive pill we don’t agree with, because we don’t know about others. We might not bother asking about a wonky ball, because the nurse might touch it. Well, it took me a while to realise this, and when I did it revolutionised my world — we don’t have to put up with these worries! There are friendly, experienced, professional people ready to help you feel better. The healthcare professionals will work with you and never make you do anything you don’t want to.

So, I know this was pretty general, but I hope you understand the importance of looking after your sexual health just that little bit more. It’s part of your well being, so be kind to yourself and know that you’re not alone.

Thanks for reading! I hope you and your sexy time partner enjoy some safe, comfortable, and happy fun together.
