5 Things You’ll Be Surprised to Learn about Strippers

For the vast majority of people, strip clubs have an unmistakable aura of mystery and danger around them. That’s because our image of strippers is invariably tainted by their depiction in movies, books, and songs, which often paint an unrealistic and/or romantic picture of the industry at large. So, if you really want to know what being a stripper is all about, here are five surprising facts about this fascinating profession:

1. Many strippers have a day job.

Some estimates show that, for most strippers, lap-dancing and pole-vaulting are merely part-time endeavors. Benefitting from the flexibility that usually comes with the position, around 60 percent of strippers also hold down a day job — 14 percent of which are employed as teachers. What’s more, approximately one in three strippers are paying for their college degree through their work. Some businesses even seek to take advantage of a stripper’s varied skill set. For example, you can hire topless waitresses in Perth that are as handy with a drink as they are pleasing to the eye.

2. Strippers make the most money during ovulation.

It’s no surprise that something as primal as seeing a naked woman or man can affect our basest instincts, but recent research has proven that the connection between fertility rates and attraction goes deeper than you might expect. To that end, a study in New Mexico showed that strippers made as much as $90 extra per shift during their ovulation period. In addition, women who used oral contraceptives were seen as less appealing by customers, earning about $700 less per month than those who didn’t employ such measures.

3. They often have to deal with incredibly annoying customers.

Anyone who has to interact with customers directly as a part of their job knows that people can sometimes be fickle and rude, but the nature of a stripper’s work makes it far more likely that he or she faces difficult situations on a regular basis. Many will resort to violence or intimidation when faced with a denial of services that are not within a stripper’s domain, while others fall prey to their own feelings and end up pursuing a stripper romantically, against their wishes. To counteract such issues, strippers are routinely given protective aids such as pepper spray, personal attack alarms, and the ability to summon security guards.

4. The field is populated with healthy, well-adjusted individuals.

One of the most wrongheaded presumptions one can make about a stripper is to assume that he or she landed in that profession by virtue of necessity or desperation. In fact, strippers report higher than average job satisfaction rates to go with earnings that can sometimes top six figures. What’s more, they have the freedom and monetary possibilities to pursue their actual passions in life, with many strippers being highly educated, ambitious individuals who do not come from particularly traumatic family situations.

5. Nearly all strippers are independent contractors.

In most parts of the world, legislation sees strippers as individual contractors without a right to a minimum wage. This means that not only is stripping not guaranteed to earn big bucks, it can sometimes result in financial losses for the inexperienced stripper. That’s because they also have to pay a house fee to the club they’re working for — one that will get taken out of their earnings no matter what. So show some generosity whenever you encounter a stripper and don’t automatically assume all of them earn good money.

All in all, stripping will remain a sought-out skill for as long as there will be a steady supply of horny males looking to engage in sexual fantasies within the safe confines of a strip club. But that doesn’t mean that some of the false myths that surround the profession need to be perpetuated. So be sure to keep in mind that the next time you engage with a stripper. Chances are, you’ll be interacting with someone that’s not all that different from you, aside from the fact that they can put on one hell of a show with nothing but a dance pole by their side.

I agree that most women or men who strip are like anyone else. But what you fail to mention is that often drugs, alcoholism and prostitution are often part of the stripper lifestyle. Yes, the smart strippers use the money for an education, however, they often become addicted to the cash and continue stripping because they end up unsatisfied with their chosen career path after they have earned their degree and tried their hand at a regular job. The truth is many people who strip are often from broken homes or have suffered from trauma like sexual abuse when they were children. There is so much more to the stripping world. I like your article but it only scratches the surface. You don't talk about the lap dancers and the champagne rooms where often there is prostitution going on. Heck, sometimes it happens in the parking lot, or often the bosses who own the clubs force girls into sexual favors. I invite you to come to my pages and read the introduction to the book I'm working on.
